Staying hydrated when water is just plain boring
The weather is finally starting to warm up here in Denver. My friends and family back home in WI are not so lucky. Getting hit with a late April snow is not my idea of a good time. Sorry friends!
Warmer weather means more fun activities outside, working in the garden and on the lawn but also unfortunately increased perspiration. I'm one of those people who hates being sweaty! I always have been. I have to dry myself off mid-workout because I hate sweat dripping on my anywhere. Period.
Even though I love being warm and all the sunshine and higher temps of Denver, I distinctly do not like being sweaty. But you can't get away from it. I also seem to be better about keeping myself hydrated in the summer months because I am more thirsty. And it was drilled into me as a child to drink more water when it's hot.
But sometimes plain ol' water is just boring! I really only drink water and coffee. (I mean, to be honest I do indulge in a cocktail or 2 every week but it's mostly water the rest of the time). Even though I know I feel better when I'm hydrated, and I always have my water bottle with me, sometimes I just need to taste something different. Ya know? These taste buds need some excitement every now and then.
So I came up with my own homemade electrolyte recipe that will keep you hydrated, is great for replenishing your body after a vigorous workout or long day in the sun and changes things up a bit, flavor-wise.
Now my recipe is actually more of a concentrate. I mix up a batch of this, which has a lot of water already in it already, but then I only fill my cup or water bottle up about 3/4 full with the electrolyte mix and then top of with more water. But you could drink it straight up if you wanted! it's all up to you and your tastes!
Citrus Electrolyte Drink
Ingredients
2 limes
2 lemons
1 orange
1 grapefruit
1 inch of ginger root roughly chopped
1 tsp Himalayan sea salt
5-10 drops Stevia (optional)
Juice all of the fruit and place in a Bullet or blender. Add ginger and sea salt and about 1/2 cup of water. Blend until ginger is incorporated. Pour base into a quart size pitcher (any pitcher will do here...no freaking out). Stir in salt and stevia if you using it. Fill pitcher with regular ol' water. Refrigerate.
That's it! When you are ready to enjoy I recommend mixing this drink with a little more water as it's pretty strong and tart. But you can enjoy as is!
